Universities exploit Fibre
Tuesday, 01 April 2008

In the first quarter of 2008 three English universities have used Singlemode fibre to extend their E1 circuits utilising Metrodata's popular FC1100 which transports E1 (2.048kbps) over single mode short haul fibre using a unit at each end of the fibre link.

With the cost of fibre falling it is becoming a valid option to use fibre connect a communication infrastructure over a greater distance. It is ideal for connect two or more buildings over a short distance like that on-campus. In fact in many academic and local authority organisations, fibre cable probably already exists, but yet unused.

Using Metrodata's fibre converters, it is now possible to cheaply, easily and reliably interconnect PBX’s and routers, or any G703 device ( or non-G703 via an Interface converter) using a BNC electrical (coaxial copper) connection, or RJ45 (CAT5 twisted pair copper).

A distance guide is up to 5km using Multimode fibre and 40km using Singlemode Short haul fibre. This can be increased to 70km using Singlemode Long haul fibre.

If you are looking for other interfaces other than E1 to fibre one of the following may be of interest:

FC2X00 series - Singlemode to Multimode fibre conversion at up to 155Mbits
FC3X00 series - E3/DS3 to Fibre Converter
FC4X00 series - STM1/OC3 to Fibre Converter
FC6X00 series - Singlemode to Multimode fibre conversion at up to 622Mbits

For a managed solution look at our MetroRack product range which offers a centralised managed chassis and modular configuration.

Support Services Increase
Monday, 31 March 2008
With more and more companies looking to outsource their datacoms network support, Metrodata has the advantage of not only supplying a range of key network infrastructure products but also provides a fast Support Service along side. A popular service is the fast 4 hour 'to-site' 24/7 response, providing initial evaluation and spare replacement. This can be offered globally via local partners.

Omantel Approvals
Tuesday, 11 March 2008
Metrodata's partner in Oman has recently supplied units to Omantel for the testing and approval of Metrodata's FC1100 (E1 to Singlemode fibre converter). The FC1100 transports E1 over a fibre link with distances up to 40km. The FC1200 will extend this even further reaching distances up to 70km.
One unit is used at each end of the fibre link and provides a robust 2Mbps link between sites.

Metrodata approved for GSA (US General Services Administration) Contract
Thursday, 28 February 2008

Metrodata has now successfully became a supplier of 11 key products:

ATM SW DSU DS3 - 80-10-056 / 80-10-057

These are available under the GSA Contract (via its US partner Engenuity) which will be available for purchase via the GSA Advantage web site

FIMO 2000: Serial to Fiber
Thursday, 22 November 2007

Increasing Metrodata's Fibre products even further a new Serial to Fibre (MM and SM) converter has been developed to allow faster serial data transfer over a fibre network. With EIA 530, V.35, V.36, X.21 and RS232 interfaces then data rates of Nx64kbps up to 4Mbps is achievable over Multimode or Singlemode fibre. This is typically twice as fast a standard serial converters and is offered with both AC mains and DC (-48VDC) options.
