This application shows an MC12000 MetroCONNECT chassis with WCC1400 modules, supporting multiple WCM1400 LAN Extension over bonded E1/T1 Edge LAN Extender Demarcation Devices. The MetroCONNECT and WCM1400 together offer LAN Extension and Ethernet demarcation, with remote management via 802.3ah OAM. Various service delivery options are available including fibre, copper, and fibre plus copper over up to 4 Fractional E1/T1 circuits. Comprehensive remote network management access is available via the MetroCONNECT including end to end remote management using 802.3ah OAM. 10M, 100M and Gigabit Ethernet applications can all be supported, as can Jumbo frames.

This application shows an WCM1400 unit being used as the LAN Extension demarcation device to deliver a Carrier Ethernet service from an MPLS core network. A wide choice of Ethernet connectivity is available for the user via the 10/100/1000baseT and SFP fibre ports. OAM support means that the WCM1400 can be remotely managed by the central network management system using standards based OAM packets. GFP is supported allowing single ended use with aggregation platforms in the core network.

This application shows how a pair of WCM1400 units can be used to offer Ethernet service demarcation and LAN Extension functionality either over up to 4 Fractional E1/T1 circuits.

This application shows how VLANs can also be used to select which site to forward user data to, e.g. when using a WCM1400 unit supporting four E1 ports at a central site supporting up to four sites with WCM1100 units each supporting a single E1 port.


The WCM1400 is a switching media converter operating in store and forward mode. The WCM1400 supports auto-negotiation, and auto MDI/MDIX cross-over switching on the copper interface.

To ensure reliable operation, the WCM1400 supports Link State Forwarding, whereby a fault on the serial port will automatically force a link down on the user ports to indicate to the attached device that there is a link problem.

The WCM1400 supports the transmission of Jumbo frames.

The WCM1400 supports 802.3ah OAM which means that the Ethernet service can be managed and monitored right up to the customer delivery point. The future WCM1400 software development roadmap includes support for LACP, IEEE802.1ag and Y.1731 OAM standards.

The WCM1400 is provided with an SFP module with LC connector supporting for example 1000Base-SX for 550 metres operation over multi-mode fibre, or 1000Base-LX for up to 10km over a single-mode fibre.

The WCM1400 is ordered without an SFP fitted, although customers can subsequently change their interface type. Please contact Metrodata for price and availability of SFP modules including long haul, 1550nm, bi-directional and CWDM.

The WCM1400 is available in a choice of 100-250 VAC or -48 VDC integrated power supplies.

The WCM1400 can easily be rackmounted in either a 1U two unit rackmount kit, a 6U eighteen unit rackmount kit.
