APX LAN CE Interface Module

Metrodata Limited

The APX 10/100BaseT LAN CE Interface Module enables 10/100BaseT equipment, such as routers, encrypters or satellite modems, to be converged with other services using the AP multi-service platform.

This module operates transparently to bridge between two LAN segments across an ATM network. A single LAN interface is presented on an auto negotiating, auto cross-over RJ45 connector. Additionally, manual configuration for fixed speed and duplex mode is supported.

This module performs adaptation of the incoming bit stream using unstructured AAL.1 to segment it into ATM cells. These ATM cells are transported across the AP infrastructure to the far end equipment. The far end AP, recovers the ATM cell stream, and from this re-assembles the 10/100BaseT data stream, again using unstructured AAL.1.

This LAN CE module offers a protocol transparent, point to point, bridge connection to another LAN CE Module, and supports full wire-speed forwarding if sufficient bandwidth is allocated. (Note that due to the AAL.1 adaptation scheme, 100Mbps of LAN traffic will require 113Mbps of ATM Bandwidth ). The Flexi-LAN Module provides local MAC address filtering at full wirespeed, and maintains a 4096 entry local MAC address filter table. Bandwidth allocation is programmable to 1bps granularity.

Management and configuration of this module is achieved via the simple menu driven user interface. Extensive statistics and status information are available to the user interface as a diagnostic aid. Additionally SNMP Traps may be generated to indicate Link Up/Down. These modules can be "Hot Swapped" to ease maintenance, with replacement modules recovering immediately without further configuration.

This module has the following features:

  • point to point transparent bridge across ATM
  • full wirespeed operation
  • auto negotiation
  • auto MDI/MDI-X crossover
  • can be used in any AP chassis
  • hot swap interface module, with configuration automatically loaded onto the replacement module
