This diagram shows how a pair of PL1100S units can be used to transport Serial (e.g. encrypted) services across an Ethernet or IP WAN network between sites. Remote management can performed via 802.3ah OAM. Dual 10/100/1000baseT and SFP fibre based Ethernet options are available and Jumbo frames are supported.

The PL1100S is a member of the PacketLINK product family, offering pseudowire Serial circuit extension and backhaul over an IP or Ethernet network. The PL1100S can be used either to provision a telco Serial data service over an IP network, or to extend a Serial connection between devices across an IP backbone, a typical application would be to extend a connection between a Serial modem and a Serial terminal over a packet network.
In parallel, Ethernet 'LAN-side' connections may be broken out from this WAN service, with prioritisation to ensure uninterrupted traffic flow to the Serial connection and thereby secure effective clock synchronisation. Telecoms Service Providers might use this to provision connections for both a Serial Data Service and an Ethernet management channel, both via a single customer IP service link.
Layer 2 Ethernet backbone networks can also be supported.
Internal packet buffering and a sophisticated clock recovery mechanism enable the PL1100S to smooth out bursty traffic and recover a smooth and stable clock without data loss.
The PacketLINK product family currently consists of four products:
- PL1100: Clear-Channel or Fractional E1/T1 TDM Extension or Service delivery over an IP or Ethernet WAN
- PL1100S: Nx64kbps (up to 4Mbps) Serial Extension or Service delivery over an IP or Ethernet WAN
- PL1400F: 4-port flexible E1/T1 and Serial Extension over an IP or Ethernet backbone
- PL3100: Clear-Channel or Framed E3/DS3 Extension or Service delivery over an IP or Ethernet WAN
In addition to Telnet & SNMP, Carrier Ethernet OAM (initially 802.3ah) is supported, enabling Service Providers to manage and monitor Ethernet services right up to the customer delivery point. Support for 802.1ag and Y.1731 OAM standards will be offered by software update.
VLANs are supported in two ways. In normal mode, VLAN tagged framed are passed unmodified; however when VLAN support is enabled, VLAN tag based switching occurs whereby access may be controlled using VLAN IDs.
Telnet access is password protected for security purposes, and SNMP is configured with a primary and multiple backup NMS stations. SNMP access will only be accepted from an authorised NMS who will have full GET/SET access to all configurable MIB items
The PL1100S is available in a choice of 100-250 VAC or -48 VDC integrated power supplies. The PL1100S can easily be rackmounted in either a 1U two unit rackmount kit, a 6U eighteen unit rackmount kit.
The PL1100S is part of the PacketLINK range of pseudowire products from Metrodata.
