LAN Extenders

Close

Connecting Ethernet over long distances normally requires Routers which require complex configuration.

However, Metrodata's Ethernet Extension products extend the plug and play functionality of Ethernet switches to join Ethernet LANs together, which means less equipment, fewer configurations and lower maintenance costs.

These plug and play Ethernet extension products enable you to interconnect your local area network (LAN)/ Ethernet over a wide area network (WAN) without the need for expensive and complex routers. An example application would be to connect a remote office network to the headquarters over an external network.

Metrodata also offers more sophisticated ethernet extension and ethernet convergence products, see the MetroConnect Ethernet Service Delivery product range.

Ethernet over wide area networks

Connecting a remote office network to the head office over a leased line

Metrodata offer various solutions with their ethernet extender family:

  • The WAN-in-a-Can family extend the plug and play functionality of LAN switches to provide LAN extension and Ethernet service provision over X.21, V.35, E1, E3, DS3 and STM-1/OC-3 leased line services
  • The LH1000 and LHM1000 products offer Ethernet extension over HSSI and serial interfaces, primarily designed to transmit LAN frames over satellite links via serial modems
  • The LV2000 product offers Ethernet extension over LVDS (EIA644) Crypto and satellite modems, as well as radio relay systems

The Metrodata WAN-in-a-Can range of ethernet extender products extend LAN connection over a wide area link. Available for the following:

  • X.21 services (15-way Male D-Type) - WC X.21, now superceded by the WCM-Serial product
  • V.35 services (34 way female M-Rack) - WC V.35, now superceded by the WCM-Serial product
  • E1 G.703 BNC/RJ45 services - WC1000 entry level Ethernet over E1 services
  • E1 G.703 BNC/RJ45 services with VLAN and remote management - WCM1100
  • E3/DS-3 G.703 BNC services - WC3445, now superceded by the WCM3100 product
  • Sonet OC-3/SDH STM-1 Fibre services - WC155, now superceded by the WCM5100 product

The Metrodata LH1000 is designed to enable the transmission of LAN frames across satellite links via serial modems. The LAN interface is auto-sensing and supports 10M, 100M, full or half duplex working. Manual selection of 100BaseT FD operation enables connection to fixed configuration router ports. The LH1000 supports a high speed HSSI port which operates at up to 110Mbps, and a medium speed multi-serial port which operates at up to 20Mbps over EIA530, RS449, X.21 and V.35, plus at lower rates over asynchronous RS232.

  • Ethernet over EIA530 services - LH1000
  • Ethernet over RS449 services - LH1000
  • Ethernet over X.21 services - LH1000
  • Ethernet over V.35 services - LH1000
  • Ethernet over RS232 services - LH1000

  • Ethernet over HSSI services - LHM1000 Managed Ethernet over HSSI LAN Extender

The LVDS DTE port can operate at asymmetric speeds since it is clocked using the DCE supplied Send & Receive Timing signals. The LVDS port is presented on a 25-way D-type male connector and supports data rates of up to 52Mbps. The LV2000 also offers Crypto Resync capability.
