Telecoms Carriers and Service Providers use Managed Ethernet Demarcation Devices (EDDs) to provide full end-to-end visibility and control of their Layer-2 infrastructure. Advanced EDDs incorporate test-traffic generation and protocols such as -T Y.1731 to monitor key service-level characteristics such as Frame Loss, Latency and Jitter.
Now, it is possible to incorporate physical-level fibre integrity checking and fault-reporting to such devices. The FCM9004 Advanced Ethernet Demarcation Device (EDD) supports Optical Time-domain Reflectometer (OTDR) functionality directly from within the unit, by incorporating the iSFC® 'Fast Fiber Fault Finder' transceivers of Optical Zonu Corp. In the event of a fibre disconnection or breakage, this offers Telecoms Carriers and Service Providers automatic and immediate visibility of the exact distance to the fibre discontinuity, enabling fast remedial action to be taken, reducing both costs and time-to-repair for customer services.
