Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) core networks abound. They offer guarantees in Quality of Service that other transmission protocols do not, yet.
So, if you are looking for high service levels in satellite/terrestrial service provision, network rollout as a leased line provider, or simply full reliability in providing integrated applications on a point-to-point or Wide Area basis, you must consider ATM as a rock-solid foundation.
ATM networking technology has been around for some 10 years. All major incumbent Carriers have ATM cores to their PDH networks, and can offer services. ATM was designed for top-quality transmission of ALL types of traffic including legacy, Frame Relay and IP.
IP networks do not yet meet the service levels that ATM can for mixed traffic. IP's fine for data only however.
Many ISP's use ATM in the core, as will the 3G UMTS Mobile networks - so ATM IS good!
