In the following application there is a requirement to convert serial EIA530/TTL to OC-3 ATM, with the main requirement being that the Metrodata AP3000 supports the exact data rate supplied by the satellite demodulator. The exact data rate is converted into ATM in the AP3000 and connected via the ATM Switch and into the ATM Network. At the far end of the ATM Network, a second AP3000 is used to reconstruct the exact original data rate to connect into the EIA530/TTL serial encrypter.

This is a typical Government System application where Metrodata can provide the solution due to the AP3000 EIA530/TTL module which supports data rates in 1bps increments up to 20Mbps. Some satellite modems and encrypters also support serial data rates that are in 1bps increments, and there generally has to be an exact data rate match with any connected equipment. The Metrodata AP3000 also supports a wide range of ATM Switch Interfaces, e.g. E1, E2, E3, DS3, STM-1 and OC-3.
Other manufacturers of similar products only support 8Kbps increments or even coarser, e.g. specific clock rates. This places constraints which either waste satellite bandwidth or restrict the range of applications that can be supported.
Using the Metrodata AP8000, we are also able to multiplex several EIA530 serial connections into a single ATM trunk. For example, we could multiplex up to 8 serial connections on EIA530 or HSSI into an E3, DS3 or OC-3 ATM switch. This is a very effective method of multiplexing, as our ability to exactly clock the serial connection means that we give you the ability to use your bandwidth on the ATM network more efficiently.
