BiDi Compatible SFP Transceivers
SFP transceivers are widely used in network equipment and telecommunication networks. Most SFP transceivers require two fibres to transmit and receive data, however, there are occassions that for some reason there is not a fibre pair available, in this instance what are your choices?
- Install a new fibre cable - not always possible, feasible or is cost prohibative
- Use a BiDi SFP
What is a BiDi SFP?
A BiDi SFP is a compact fibre transceiver that uses WDM (wavelength division multiplexing) technology, this is designed to send and receive data over a single fibre cable.
Unlike a standard SFP, they are deployed in matched pairs, using two different wavelengths, one to transmit and one to receive. For example:
- SFP A - Tx1550nm Rx1310nm
- SFP B - Tx1310nm Rx1550nm
The diagram below shows how the Tx wavelength from SFP A once it reaches SFP B is reflected to the Rx terminal, and vice-versa. The different wavelengths allow the light to transmit along the same cable without causing interferance.
Why use a BiDi SFP?
A BiDi SFP transceiver provides a simple and easy solution when you are presented with a limited number of fibre cables, or limited conduit space. A BiDi SFP can also be used to enhance the capacity of existing optical infrastucture to reduce the overall cost of your network whilst increasing data capacity.
Another advantage is reliability, single fibre solutions are less likely to exhibite connection issues due to fewer connections and end points.
