These products are dedicated to asset preservation, while taking advantage of new technologies that enhance networks capabilities or just save costs.

We understand that major investments have been made in technology that is no longer considered to be cutting edge but still continues to deliver significant value in many businesses globally.

New opportunities get presented all the time for cost savings or network enhancements that were it not for these legacy products would either be impossible to implement or may no longer make financial sense if every part of a system had to be completely replaced.

Ethernet Extension & Service Delivery

Connecting Ethernet over long distances normally requires Routers which require complex configuration.

However, Metrodata's Ethernet Extension products extend the plug and play functionality of Ethernet switches to join Ethernet LANs together, which means less equipment, fewer configurations and lower maintenance costs.

These plug and play Ethernet extension products enable you to interconnect your local area network (LAN)/ Ethernet over a wide area network (WAN) without the need for expensive and complex routers. An example application would be to connect a remote office network to the headquarters over an external network.

Metrodata offer various solutions with their ethernet extender family:

  • The WAN-in-a-Can family extend the plug and play functionality of LAN switches to provide LAN extension and Ethernet service provision over X.21, V.35, E1, E3, DS3 and STM-1/OC-3 leased line services
  • The LH1000 product offers Ethernet extension over HSSI and serial interfaces, primarily designed to transmit LAN frames over satellite links via serial modems
  • The LV2000 product offers Ethernet extension over LVDS (EIA644) Crypto and satellite modems, as well as radio relay systems

The Metrodata WAN-in-a-Can range of ethernet extender products extend LAN connection over a wide area link. Available for the following:

  • X.21 services (15-way Male D-Type) - WC X.21
  • V.35 services (34 way female M-Rack) - WC V.35
  • E3/DS-3 G.703 BNC services - WC3445
  • Sonet OC-3/SDH STM-1 Fibre services - WC155

The Metrodata LH1000 is designed to enable the transmission of LAN frames across satellite links via serial modems. The LAN interface is auto-sensing and supports 10M, 100M, full or half duplex working. Manual selection of 100BaseT FD operation enables connection to fixed configuration router ports. The LH1000 supports a high speed HSSI port which operates at up to 110Mbps, and a medium speed multi-serial port which operates at up to 20Mbps over EIA530, RS449, X.21 and V.35, plus at lower rates over asynchronous RS232.

  • Ethernet over HSSI services - LH1000

The LVDS DTE port can operate at asymmetric speeds since it is clocked using the DCE supplied Send & Receive Timing signals. The LVDS port is presented on a 25-way D-type male connector and supports data rates of up to 52Mbps. The LV2000 also offers Crypto Resync capability.

  • Ethernet over LVDS services - LV2000

Metrodata’s ATM product range provide Rate, Interface and Media conversion functions for E1, T1, E2, E3, E4, DS3, STM1, OC3 leased line, fibre and copper ATM presentations. The Access processor range also provides a convergence function between a wide variety of interface types.

These products are 2-port ATM switching converters which perform physical interface conversion and rate adaption functions. For example allowing 155Mbit/s ATM equipment to interconnect over lower speed ATM or leased line services.

ATM Network Interfaces: E1, E2, E3, DS3, E4

ATM Equipment Interfaces: E3, DS3, STM-1, OC-3, including electrical and multimode and singlemode optical interfaces

These products are 2-port ATM feeder devices which allow non-ATM equipment e.g. PBX, Video Codec, to be integrated into an ATM infrastructure. For example allowing 2Mbit/s PBX equipment or 34Mbit/s broadcast quality video to interconnect across an ATM network.

Non-ATM Interfaces: E1, E2, E3, DS3

ATM Interfaces: E3, DS3, STM1, OC3, including electrical and multimode and singlemode optical interfaces

These products are 2-port ATM Network Termination Units which allow the connection of 155Mbit/s ATM equipment with multimode fibre or twisted pair copper connections to ATM services which are typically delivered via singlemode or BNC circuits. As well as a media conversion function they perform a service demarcation function, offering comprehensive operational performance statistics.

ATM Port 1: STM1 or OC3 155Mbit/s multimode or twisted pair RJ45

ATM Port 2: STM1 or OC3 155Mbit/s Singlemode Fibre (long haul or short haul) or BNC

The Metrodata Access Processor (AP) range is a modular platform designed to support the transport of multiple services. The Metrodata AP is based around a powerful ATM switch, and there are 3 basic chassis models of AP each supporting a different number of modules. The AP modules are hot swappable and can be used in any of these chassis.

The AP range has a comprehensive selection of interfaces, and can be used in a variety of ways depending on your application. It can be used to simply transport Non-ATM services such as IP, Serial, Leased Lines over incompatible infrastructure. Alternatively it can be used to multiplex and switch ATM connections.

The AP Range can transport most non-ATM services transparently with ATM used purely as the transport mechanism. It provides flexibility of interface, flexibility of bit-rate and flexibility of operation.

Non-ATM Interfaces: T1, E1, E2, E3, DS3, OC-3/STM-1, EIA530, HSSI, ECL, ASI, 10/100Mbit/s LAN

Metrodata offer a variety of different products for multiplexing various services, using a variety of underlying technologies, such as TDM, SDH and ATM.

These conversions are performed transparently and so are independent of protocol or router configuration. Comprehensive management functionality is also offered which allows the full range of monitoring and configuration control via either local or remote management. Devices can be managed locally using a terminal, or remotely using Telnet or SNMP via an IP network or in band management.

These products multiplex multiple Nx64kbps services onto E1 or fractional E1 services using TDM technology.

  • FM4200 converges an E1 drop port plus X.21/V.35 at 64kbps to 1984kbps onto an E1 2M G703 leased lines
  • FM4500 converges an E1 drop port plus Quad X.21/V.35 at 64kbps to 1984kbps onto an E1 2M G703 leased lines

These products multiplex multiple services using ATM technology, including many ATM service types such as E1, E2, E3, DS3, STM-1/OC-3, plus many non-ATM service types such as PBX, mobile, broadcast video, Ethernet, IP, serial data, encrypted data, which are presented on interfaces such as T1, E1, E2, E3, DS3, EIA530, HSSI, ECL, ASI, 10/100baseT Ethernet.

Metrodata’s HSSI & LVDS product range enables a wide variety of HSSI and LVDS equipment to be inter-connected together either directly or via high speed leased lines. The BC1X00 and BC2x00 Baseband Converters enable EIA530, HSSI and LVDS equipment to be interconnected (e.g. routers, cryptos and satellite modems). The LV2000 enables Ethernet equipment to be connected via LVDS equipment (e.g. cryptos, satellite modems and radio relay systems. The HE1000 HSSI extender offers the ability to extend HSSI up to 150 metres over coaxial cable. The LHM1000 offers the ability to pass Ethernet traffic over a HSSI interface.

Metrodata's LVDS Converters mean that Ethernet equipment can be extended over the latest generation of LVDS encrypters, radio systems and satellite modems. The LV2000 is typically used in pairs to interface Cisco Routers to LVDS Cryptos, LVDS Satcom Modems or LVDS Radio Relay Systems. Metrodata's Baseband Converters present a major step forwards in solving interoperability and interfacing issues within Defence networking.

  • Ethernet extension over LVDS - LV2000

Metrodata’s HSSI converters allow routers with HSSI ports to be interconnected via a variety of high speed leased line services, as well as connected to router with different port types including Packet-over-Sonet (POS).

The HE1000 HSSI extender offers the ability to extend HSSI up to 150 metres over coaxial cable (e.g. within a data centre, or an earth station) at data rates up to 51.84Mbps. The HE1000 can also be used as a HSSI-ASI converter for interconnecting HSSI routers via ASI satellite modems.

The FM product range offers an effective and managed way of converting router HSSI, X.21, V.35, RJ45 and BNC interfaces to leased lines, e.g. Nx64kbps, E1, E2, E3, DS3.

The DC product range offer a cost effective unmanaged way of connecting Router Serial WAN Interface cards (or similar information sources) to leased line circuits such as E1 G.703 2Mbps. This conversion is performed transparently and so is independent of protocol or router configuration. Various serial port types and leased line connector combinations options are available. These products are available as standalone modem style units, can be rack mounted using either a 1U two unit rack mount kit or6U eighteen unit rack mount kit.

Our HSSI Serial Converters offer conversion from HSSI DTE router ports to E3 G.703 34Mbps and DS3 G.703 45Mbps leased lines.

The DC2000 is a historic product offering conversion from EIA-530 DTE router ports to E1 G.703 2Mbps leased lines.

EIA-530 DCE equipment can usually be supported via crossover cables, although the clocking configuration requires careful consideration.
